Learning Lives in the Whole Body, Not Just the Brain

For too long, we’ve been taught to think of intelligence as something that lives only in the brain — as though our thoughts, ideas, and problem-solving skills happen in isolation, untouched by the rest of our body. But as Carla Hannaford highlights in her groundbreaking book Smart Moves: Why Learning Is Not All in Your Head, this couldn’t be further from the truth. (I highly recommend this book!)

From the moment we’re born until the last days of our lives, the body and brain are in constant conversation. Movement isn’t just a way to get from one place to another — it’s one of the primary drivers of how we learn, grow, and develop.


Movement and the Developing Brain

Babies don’t just wiggle, roll, crawl, and toddle around for fun. Each of those milestones is a neural workout, wiring the brain for higher-level functions like focus, memory, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Movement stimulates the vestibular system (balance), strengthens sensory integration, and lays the groundwork for reading, writing, and reasoning later on.

In other words: every time a child moves, they’re literally growing their brain.


Complexity Through Motion

Hannaford emphasizes that movement actually grows the brain’s capacity for complex thought. Physical activity increases blood flow, oxygen, and neurochemicals that enhance synaptic connections — the wiring between neurons. These connections are the foundation of memory, learning, and creativity.

Think of it this way: a moving body creates a flexible, resilient brain. And a flexible, resilient brain makes it possible to think critically, adapt, and engage with the world at a higher level.


The Myth of the “Still” Learner

Modern education often assumes that stillness equals learning — that a quiet, motionless student is a focused student. But neuroscience says otherwise. When we remove movement from learning, we strip away one of the brain’s most powerful tools for processing information.

That’s why students often focus better after a walk, a stretch, or a movement break. It’s not a distraction from learning — it’s fuel for it.


Movement Matters for All Ages

This truth doesn’t stop in childhood. Adults, too, rely on the body for learning and memory. Physical activity supports cognitive sharpness, reduces stress, and slows the decline of brain function with age.

Every time we dance, stretch, walk, or play, we’re not just exercising our muscles — we’re exercising our brain.


Bringing It Into Practice

Carla Hannaford’s work reminds us of a powerful, simple truth: movement is not separate from learning — it is learning.

As educators, parents, and lifelong learners, we can bring this understanding into daily life:

  • Encourage children to wiggle, move, and stretch as part of their learning.

  • Build movement breaks into classrooms and workdays.

  • Value play and physical exploration as much as reading and writing.
